A Bangkok institution, this quality New York style lounge/club has been running for over 10 years now! With great resident DJ's and some of the finest international DJ's and live acts playing each month. By no means the biggest club in terms of size, Q Bar gets very crowded on weekends attracting a mixed clientele, if it all gets too hot for you retreat upstairs to the spacious balcony. With a diverse range of themed nights, Q covers all the Bases proving to be a continued clubbers favourite, particularly during the week when other clubs are somewhat lacking appeal.
Décor has kept pace with the times and the new upstarts around Bkk have obviously drawn inspiration from this daddy of a club!
Cover Charge: Friday & Saturday 600 baht for 2 drinks or 400 baht deducted from your bill after 22:00.

At first sight the room appears stark,
almost art deco, with a bar straight out
of Rebel Without A Cause. Californian
chef Steve is the chef manager and a friendly
cove who will make certain you're comfortable
and well fed. The menu has a Californian
edge, although the base cooking is classical
with modern twists, and the wine list
is impressive. The music comes from various
jazz musicians.

Opposite the Emporium this gem of a pub is getting a cult following. Big on the sports side this place packs it out for the music too. Johnny Deschamps woos the crowd with anything from Sinatra to Sting and still has time to come and say Hi to the customers on Friday and Sunday. The Vertigo start the weekend rolling early on Thursday with a great mix of artists; Lou Reed, U2, Eva Cassidy, some very solid stuff.

A classic rock bar which has survived
the years despite unspectacular attendances
and often unspectacular local rock bands.
But that's part of its charm and there
are a few musicians who pass through who
can still strut their stuff! One of the
only venues in Bangkok where rock still
rules, overall quality has been improved.
The bands at the weekend tend to be better
though, and the city's rockers still convene
here as they have been doing the last
16 years. If hard rock is your thing,
look no further.

Scratch Dog
8-10
Windsor Suites Hotel
(basement level)
Sukhumvit Soi 20, Sukhumvit Road
Bangkok 10110
Tel: 02 663 4447 Tucked away on the basement level of the 5 star Windsor hotel on Sukhumvit soi 20 is the late night disco called Scratch Dog. This is a familiar hot spot for Thai and farangs alike. Like all other clubs of this genre there is an entrance fee which is soon forgotten as a complimentary drink is served in exchange for your ticket. The red carpeted steps go down to soundproof doors that guard the entrance to the club that occupies a sizeable square room. Meeting and greeting staff swiftly and efficiently whisk arrivals to a table.
The club is situated on two levels. The more popular of them is the lower level which consists of small tables in the centre surrounded by larger tables with sofas for those who seek a more comfortable night out. The other area horseshoes around the sunken level and is typically used as an overflow area, however it is equally as enjoyable and preferred by some. Most of the music played in this club is hip hop with a large selection of both old school and modern artists. The great sound system more than makes up for the lack of a live band or dancers which are almost too common on Bangkok's night club scene. Scratch Dog is a great venue for those who are not ready to end their nocturnal frolicking by 2am.

Located on the lower floor of this grand hotel, Spasso is a chameleon that starts the night as a very acceptable Italian restaurant and ends as a full-blown disco, albeit with live music. At the weekends it gets packed and after 10, when the music starts, there is a Bt600 entrance charge, which includes two free drinks.

The name Spice Club may suggest hot and sweaty but that is not
entirely the case here, primarily because there are two seating areas. The main area gives the energetic party animal the opportunity to get to the centre of the club where lies, the majority of the crowd. This gives you front row seats to the large stage, that is home to the regular live bands and daily coyote girls. The club DJ booth is in the centre of the room. The play list is predominantly the latest club mixes and hip hop tunes and party normally goes on until dawn The other area is for the more relaxed clubber where there is an array
of soft stools and chairs so that you can sit comfortably, hold a
conversation and have a hassle freedrink. However be warned that towards the end some nights the club can get a little rowdy. Needless to say this is because of excessive alcohol consumption by a few of the late night drinkers who occasionally uses those comfortable seats and transforms them into their own personal dancing pedestals: when that happens, either you'll have to join in, or your hassle-free drink may end as part of the decor!

This is a large, modern room that's well-equipped but offers little in the way of food, which is just as well considering the low tables. The night I went the place was very short of punters and I fear this may often be the case - it's a big room to fill.

The newest addition to this scene is the Superfly (Octoer 2007). Owned by the same people who own the infamous Tunnel night club, the late night, after hours disco favoured by the hard core party goers and full of Bangkok's younger crowd keeping the night alive. Super Fly with its tabloid clientele is definitely the new kid on the block and brings real competition to the chic Bed Supper Club and the well established Q-Bar. Q-Bar has been one of Bangkok's Top places to be seen in, for almost 10 years now.
Superfly is situated on the corner of Rama 4 and Soi Saladaeng 1 , opposite the HSBC bank. Incidentally under the HSBC bank is where you will find the nearest parking facility, if you don't want to make the walk for any reason, the club offers a valet parking service Super Fly is situated in three areas with a good sized, lit up 70s style, dance floor on the main level surrounded by surprisingly comfortable funky purple rubber sofas, which is all directed towards the main stage. The main stage is home to two VIP tables and the DJ booth. Directly opposite the main stage is the main bar and this area is inevitably packed at peak times. Thankfully the service usually copes well. Looking down on to the dance floor is the first floor mezzanine where there are more sofas and a second bar. This is a good place to retreat from the hustle and bustle of the downstairs, without feeling totally secluded from the party atmosphere. The third and final is the chill out area is outside just to the left of the entrance to the club. This Buddha lounge area, with its simple yet stylish decor, is the perfect place to have a relaxed drink. With it's a wide selection of drinking areas as well as one of Thailand's top and most advanced sound systems, Super fly aspiration is to be Bangkok's number one night-clubs. I am sure it has a good chance of being just that
Although closing at 2 am, unlike some of the other late night discos, Superfly it is a definite hit in my books.

Tokyo Joes is slowly evolving into an archetypal blues venue: where the band all puff away happily before starting the gig and the beers are on stage. But the music is all that matters and the music is good. It is normally blues but soul and jazz creep in. Bangkok 's blues community revolves round Joe's with Soi Dog's Jeff T running the joint as well as taking to the stage at least once a week.
The Sunday blues jam is rated as one of the best jams in town with most musicians in the ex-pat community turning up regularly as well as the Thai blues men. Small smoky an with limited food a great spot when you want the real thing!

Archetypical Thai version of an English pub, with a good central bar for sitting and vast bench at one end to accommodate the bar over flow. The other end has a music stage where a band performs every night. The menu is extensive with a good mix of Thai food, pasta, steaks and traditional pub meals. The wine list owes a great deal to the owners other interest the up market Witches the city centre: I do not see a great demand for 5,000 Baht bottles of wine after a few pints of Guinness or Kilkenny!
The spring rolls I had were listed as spinach and cheese spring rolls and that is what they were: I was not sure it really worked but somebody was trying! My lamb burger was. I thought, a little over spicy but otherwise fine. A sign outside says the best burgers in Bangkok are served in the WT: a big claim in a city awash with fast food! My companion had Thai (Issan) food which was very well presented and I assured was first rate. Not haute cuisine but a good honest fun eatery.
