The Lobby Lounge at Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel will be featuring " Red Shoes ", a talented foursome from the "Land Down Under".
Made up of graduates of Australia 's most prestigious music schools, Red Shoes will amaze you with their amazing skill and versatility. The lineup consists of vocalist Verity Guthrie and guitarist Kim Murray, both with degrees from the internationally acclaimed Western Australian Conservatorium of Music, drummer Chris Oldman, a graduate of the Academy of Performing Arts, and bassist Desmond White, who holds a bachelor's degree in Music from Edith Cowan University.
Red Shoes have wowed audiences in 3 continents. Their repertoire is a sophisticated blend of jazz, blues, Latin, pop, rock, R&B and includes favorites like The Girl From Ipanema, You Don't Know Me, It Had to Be You, Dance With Me, I Love the Nightlife, Just the Two of Us, and More Than Words.
Drop by the Lobby Lounge to catch the red-hot Red Shoes band - you won't believe your ears! Red Shoes perform nightly except Sunday at the Lobby Lounge, 9pm-midnight Monday-Thursday and 9:30pm-1am Friday-Saturday.

The Brad Meldau Trio, scheduled to do a gig here for the US Ambassador has pulled out due to security reasons. This has left their support group The Marinucci Quartet all dressed up with nowhere to play. Unfortunately it was with such short notice that the whole thing will just fall through.
Also in November Robbie Williams is here (November 14 th .) and in October it is the big one: Elvis in concert on Saturday 21 st . For more details on these and other events go to Thaiticketmaster.

This coming Friday September 15, the pride of KL's music scene Purple Haze will be doing a one night only gig at Tokyo Joe's Blues Bar in Sukhumvit Soi 24. As events of this type are few and far between make sure to be there and hopefully with enough support it could become more of a regular thing.

The fate of Koh Samui Music Festival remains to be seen although the prognosis is not good. Many rumours surround Coco properties who funded last years extravaganza and discovered the hard way that organizing concerts is not for amateurs; unless they have very deep pockets. None of those rumours are indicative of a happy ending.

Gig of the Week - 8th September 2006

Bully's

Now, Soi Nana is not exactly the place that comes to mind when you think of live music despite the fact that a couple, three years ago there was the venerable Warbler which still today is being mentioned with the kind of sentiment usually reserved for members of the opposite sex by some punters. Warbler did have a program of good solid live music ranging from the latest pop hits nightly to a blues jam every Sunday evening. Warbler was brought to its knees by owner Santos who pulled the classic scam of selling more shares in the bar than could ever exist. Of course today the new Hilary bar occupies the premises that was Warbler's as well as the building in front, and they have a full music programs which is let say contemporary in nature although me old mate Lambo (Lam Morrison) occasionally puts in an appearance. Thai contemporary in this context means hip hop and hotel California!
Soi 4 itself has since seen the opening of several new venues including the subject of our recent visit. Strictly speaking not in Soi 4 Bully's is located on the main Sukhumvit Road between Soi 4 and soi 2 next door to the Marriot. Bully's, is a spacious venue that now has all the right ingredients for a good night out. I say now because Bully's has had a few false starts with a certain lack of direction until recently. Now with Ed firmly at the helm Bully's has turned it's back on the product most sold in Soi 4 and settled into the good life as a real pub selling alcohol, food, pool, sports TV and occasionally live music. If you want that other product it is strictly BYO.
There are half dozen or so pool tables of the highest order (read quality), several flat screen TV's showing various sports from around the World. There is a row of comfortable booths lining one wall for a more private interlude, and the must for a good pub, a decent bar that begins just to the right of the entrance. A line of beers on tap pays tribute to the bars new found success since they all have regular customers. A grouping of stand alone tables fills the gap between bar and booths and a recent renovation makes the traffic between pool tables and the rest of the bar a breeze.
Bully's features a large menu with a variety that should satisfy just about everybody, from large burgers to steaks with a good sprinkling of Tex Mex thrown in for good measure. On the night in question I opted for the Chicken Fajitas. Fajitas are fun and if you are not prickly can be enjoyed much more if eaten using you hands. Bully's Fajitas are tasty and filling and the portion large enough to slow down all but the hungriest of big eaters.
Never good at pool I decided nonetheless to have a game against one of the staff and was of course thoroughly thumped. The pool tables are located to the front of the band stand in the back area of the room with a small area to one side reserved for darts. All of the tables were constantly in use but the wait between games was not long thanks to a good system. After taking a couple of beatings by a young lady I decided to retire gracefully back to my table as the band was about to commence the evening's show.

This being Friday night the band was Cannonball, a blues groove outfit made up of expats that plays slick covers of Allman Brothers classics and a range of well crafted songs from their debut CD. With song titles like “Texas Bound Train”, “Mercury” and the much closer to home “Suzie Wong” Cannonball front man Keith “EZY” Nolan is without doubt one of the best keyboard players around town these days. And he sings as well!! In fact most of Cannonball's originals are penned by EZY and the band released an album not long ago. Currently Bully's feature's two bands twice a week with Bangkok blues stalwarts Soi Dog Blues Band taking to the stage every Saturday night. As Bully's is still a fairly new operation the other nights of the week remain to filled once the right bands are found. A good policy in order to offer a well rounded entertainment program.
Bully's is the kind of place that attracts a large variety of customers and the room is large enough to handle them. From groups of visitors in for a drink and a look to couples that take their pool seriously enough to bring their own cues, and everything in between.
The staff are well trained and service minded and the loos which sport the signs “Sexy boy” and “Sexy Girl” in case there was ever any confusion are clean. If pool is your thing the tables are second to none from what I could see anyway, or if you just want to stroll in for a drink and some good live music from professional bands in a room with good ambience, you owe it to yourself to check out this new venue. Not to mention the fact that all the important games are shown nightly with enough TV's so that you can see the action no matter where you are situated in the room.
