REELIN' IN THE YEARS AT DECIBEL – ROCK BLAST FROM THE PAST!
Usually we focus on food and beverage as much as the music when we approach a live music venue for this feature, and inevitably we spend time tasting and telling how the food is and whether or not we are really in a restaurant or a bar.
But no such problem this time around as we lucked in to the most beautiful rock venue in Bangkok, bar none, full of great live music and really tight bands and yes - they do food too.
But walk into the Decibel rock pub and be prepared to find yourself reeling in the years as you step back into the past with vibrant colours and the vibe from the days when you and Pink Floyd were just boys jamming their way to a record deal, and the Beatles, the Stones and the rest of us were discovering the joys and otherwise of psychedelic experimentations.
FAR OUT, RIGHT?
This is a 21 st century underground Carnaby Street with all the glitter, glam and bells and whistles to haul you smiling happily back across the decades to a much better time in the history of music, and right here in Bangkok.
You can call it nostalgia but it goes a little deeper than that when you start a club to revitalise interest in a music that had its days of true glory more than 30 years ago. But the man doing the remembering - Sunate Burakasikorn - is well qualified to return to the future as he says, having played with Kaleidoscope, one of Thailand's great rock bands of the 60's and 70's and beyond. They still headline here with Edward Kaleidoscope still fronting the band.
So it's no surprise that they are a feature here at Decibel Pub & Restaurant on Lat Phrao Soi 23, a place where you can come and relive the musical past. And a wonderful past it was too, with a huge mix of music surfacing or rather exploding in the 60s and 70s including from the likes of The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Zappa, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Grand Funk Railroad, on to Deep Purple, Aerosmith, The Guess Who, Guns N Roses (in their nappies presumably: Ed.) and many, many more.
But Sunate, the owner and once drummer with Kaleidoscope, does not confine his memories just to rock, and his new venue accommodates the music of Sly And the Family Stone, James Brown, the Average White Band and even acknowledges the role of punk and likes of the The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The New York Dolls and The Ramones.
Sunate believes that the music of the 60s and 70s should not die and indeed sees the need for the music to be available and on tap for a new generation whose music today is underpinned by a wealth of styles and genres which developed from the 50s, right up to the present day.
But he is particularly passionate about the music of the 70s and has long searched for a venue where he could recreate 70s music authentically and to the quality and standard he feels the often complex music deserves. The décor, lighting and sound system are all 5-star and the roomy venue which can seat 600 hundred is a great night out, weekend or otherwise.
The live music here includes tight and terse songs by live acts The Flash, The Decibel Band and of course Kaleidoscope and guest acts like The Beatlenuts, a band of great musicians who need no introduction with a name like that!
And yes there is a wonderful menu with all the best Thai food rice dishes and Tom Yum Goong and Yam and Som Tam and very nice the food we had was too but that was not why we were here. It's great to have the option to have food with your booze and a large Heineken will knock you back 180 baht, a small one 120, a bottle of Johnny Walker Red Baht 1,300, Black 1,600, Green 1,900 and a flask of Hennessy Baht 2,200. Coke and soda spring for 50 Baht a pop so it's on a par with the other night spots.
At Decibel you can sample live soft rock, progressive rock and full on hard rock depending whose on stage. But rest assured the music will be the best of its kind in town, because the players are the real thing, and have been playing the music they love all their lives – live on stage.
