It's not every day you get the chance to
see two of rock 'n' roll's greatest stars live on the same stage. But
the other night at the Patpong's legendary Radio City bar, I did just
that.
Imagine; Elvis Presley and Tom Jones (plus support) at the same gig!
And I didn't even have to pay to get in!
I arrived at around 11.15pm and the place was buzzing. The King was
on stage and the crowd - men and women, Thais and farangs, young and
old - were going crazy.
It was fantastic to watch. Dressed in a shimmering Viva Las Vegas-style
white suit, the great man gyrated his way through classic track after
classic track. By the time he got to Return To Sender I was half expecting
the two middle-aged ladies sitting at the front of the stage - they
had clearly got there early - to swoon at his feet.
Now, I know some of you will be saying, "Hang on, didn't Elvis
pass away in 1977?" Well, yes, sadly, he did. But as far as the
people at Radio City last night were concerned he's alive and kicking
- if only in the form of a Thai impersonator.
Seriously, though, this guy is good. He looks like Elvis, he sings like
Elvis, he moves like Elvis. Goddamn it, he is Elvis!
But don't be thinking this is a one-man show. Sharing the stage with
the King was The President Band, Radio City's resident house band and
old-stagers on the Bangkok music scene.
With an average age of around 50, these guys have been around long enough
to know exactly how to entertain a crowd, which they do night in, night
out. But not only do they sound great, they have fun, particularly the
two guys who make up the brass section who I could have watched for
hours.
When Elvis finished, around midnight, there was a short interval, so
we took the opportunity to charge our glasses. We were paying Bt120
a pop for a small Heineken - which is a fairly standard price in good
music venues about town, although a little above the Patpong norm, but
it's well worth the extra few pennies.
And by the time I'd have told you that last night, over the loud but
good CD music playing during the break, it would have been time to get
on with the show.
Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome on stage Mr Tom Jones!
The crowd, albeit considerably reduced by this time (Elvis is the main
draw), yelled their appreciation and the sex bomb from the valleys launched
into his first number.
Unfortunately for me, that's when things started to go just a little
astray.
While Tom looked great - tight jeans, open necked shirt, oversized medallion
- his voice simply didn't match up. On one or two numbers he performed
well - Green Green Grass of Home, for instance - but in the main he
lacked the range and the power to really do the songs justice.
I was also a bit surprised by his playlist. Did Tom Jones ever record
My Girl? And why did he choose to do Knock On Wood (which I doubt was
ever anything more than an album track), but not What's New Pussycat?
A little strange, but I don't mean to be unkind. Nor do I want to give
you the impression I didn't enjoy Tom's show, because I did. I was just
a little bemused by some of his material.
Thankfully, for me at least, Tom went out with a bang at around 1am
with a pretty good version of It's Not Unusual - my all-time favourite.
With all the big guns now departed, and just an hour to go until closing,
the task of keeping the punters happy fell to a young pop group called
The Boss Band. And what a fine job they did.
Opening with five straight Beatles songs - they read the retro vibe
superbly - they went on to knock out a host of classics from stars as
diverse as Bob Marley, Carlos Santana and Patti LaBelle.
And by the time 2 o'clock came I, and everyone else who'd stayed on,
was yelling for more. It won't be long before I go back.
Radio City is on Patpong 1, off Silom Road.
